How we research sewer-lateral rules

The goal is a useful answer traceable to the authority that actually governs the property—not a generic plumbing article with a city name swapped in.

Municipality selection

We review current Google results for a focused query cluster, score the urgency of the question, weakness of available answers, depth of local rules, strength of official evidence, and usefulness of the next action. A municipality is publishable only when official-source availability receives the maximum score.

Source order

Municipal codes and ordinances.
Official city and sewer-utility pages.
Official public-works and program documents.
Official permit, inspection, and contractor-license sources.
Government sources for general context.

Secondary sources can lead us to an official document, but they do not independently support a municipal policy claim.

Evidence labels

verified: A reviewed primary source directly supports the statement.
unclear: Official sources are ambiguous, incomplete, or appear to conflict.
expired: The official source describes a program or rule whose stated period has ended.
not found in reviewed sources: We did not locate the item in the listed sources. This never means it does not exist.

The 60-second publishing test

A reviewer must quickly find the likely responsible party, the under-street rule, a next action, assistance status, sale-inspection status, permit path, supporting official source, and every unresolved issue. Pages with an unsupported core rule remain drafts and do not enter the sitemap.

Freshness and changes

The date on a guide is the date a human editor actually reviewed the listed material. Automated checks flag broken links, approaching program dates, and changes to source-page fingerprints. They do not silently rewrite a published policy claim.

Corrections

Municipal staff, utilities, residents, and contractors can send a source-backed correction. Urgent sewer problems should go to the official contact named in the local guide.
